Another theory is that they originated in Africa since they resemble the African Fataliii pepper. The earliest mention of datil peppers in Florida is from 1880 by S.D. Valls, a jelly maker who came from Chile. Datil Peppers have a heat level similar to the habanero – 100,000-300,000 on the Scoville heat scale for peppers. Datil Peppers have a sweet, fruity flavor with a latent kick of heat. Sweet varieties of Datil Peppers have been cultivated which are red when ripe and have little to no heat at all.
